"My
paintings are executed from start to finish on site,
outdoors, and sometimes take months. When you work
outdoors, you surrender a lot of control over your
subject and that is what I like about it; the interactive
experiential character. It is the opposite of starting
with a clear cut idea and projecting that into the
work. You learn about the site as you proceed and
the painting expands; no matter what thoughts or
opinions I may have about what is there when I begin,
what concerns me as I work are the things themselves.
I always try to be open to the rich, endless complexities
of the innocent act of looking at the view: the
nuances involved in it and the many ways of playing
with it makes it possible for something to become
a revelation when it might so easily have been passed
by or merely recorded as a boring iteration of the
facts."
