John Borden Evans, the
son of a Presbyterian minister, was born in Scotland
in 1956 and currently lives on a 150-year-old farm
south of Charlottesville, Virginia. Evans' work
draws inspiration from his experience - the differing
landscapes of Scotland, New Zealand and Virginia;
his close-knit family; his exposure to diverse religious
imagery; and his early explorations as an abstract
painter. His highly expressive and tactile images
of landscape, and the animals that inhabit it, are
whimsical and evocative of American folk culture.
But beneath the simplicity lies a more complex and
provocative undercurrent.
"I enjoyed the challenge of painting a violin.
In my normal painting process an abstract shape
suggests an animal or a tree and leads me along
a path of discovery. The shape of the violin turned
upside down reminded me of an elephant head. I used
acrylic paint, wood, buttons, and jewels in an attempt
to render this idea."
John Borden Evans maintains an active exhibition
schedule throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast
regions in solo, group, juried and invitational
exhibitions, and has won numerous awards for his
paintings and works on paper.
