Malcolm Hughes has loved
painting the Virginia landscape over the past decade.
Whether the mountains and valleys of his North Garden
neighborhood, the University of Virginia lawn in
nearby Charlottesville, or shoreline views on the
New River, Chesapeake Bay, or the Atlantic to the
east, it all falls under the gaze of his artistic
eye.
Working in similar fashion to the American and French
Impressionists, from where he drew much inspiration
in the early years, each subject is developed from
outdoor painting. Special attention is given to
outdoor light, color, and atmosphere. Studies are
completed later in the studio, or developed there
into larger pieces.
Mr. Hughes began painting in his early teenage years
in Texas, followed by a dozen years in the Taos,
New Mexico area. In time he found the eastern coast
to be his favorite region, due to the extreme variation
of topography, weather, urban, rural, and seascape
subjects. Of his motivation in painting Malcolm
says, "Beauty is usually the thing I'm looking
to replicate in a painting. The connection with
beauty and nature is fundamental to the meaning
and nourishment we derive within life itself. I
hope my work serves as a window into that reality."
Malcolm Hughes paintings have been collected throughout
the United States and Japan for over thirty years,
and his memberships have included the American Artist's
Professional League and the Oil Painters of America.
His paintings may be seen at G. Stanton Gallery
in Dallas, Texas, L'etoile Restaurant (upstairs)
in Charlottesville, Virginia, and in his studio
gallery in North Garden, Virginia by appointment.
Currently Hughes is completing a series of paintings
of Monticello and the University Lawn begun a year
ago, entitled, Mr. Jefferson's Creations in Current
Settings.
