David Vonderheide is doing double duty this season as Interim Principal Trumpet with the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia, as well as the full-time Principal Trumpet with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Dave graduated from Northwestern University where he studied with legendary teacher Victor Chicowicz.
Vonderheide joined the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in 1998 as Second Trumpet, a position he held until 2010 when he was named Principal Trumpet. He has soloed with the VSO – including a performance of Haydn’s Trumpet Concert – and will be featured in Aaron Copland’s Quiet City in 2019.
Additional orchestra positions include Interim Principal Trumpet with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Guest Associate Principal Trumpet with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
He has served on the faculties of Christopher Newport University and The College of William and Mary where he appeared as a faculty guest soloist, recorded with several ensembles and toured China with the Wind Ensemble.
Dave resides in Portsmouth, Virginia, with his wife, Virginia Symphony Orchestra violinist Elizabeth Vonderheide.
