Membership in the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia is open to all UVA students, faculty and community musicians through audition. As part of the university’s pandemic protocols, auditions for the spring semester for all ensembles will be held via online submissions.
Since full-scale public concerts are not possible this fall, what would you be auditioning for? Here is Music Director Benjamin Rous’s reply:
“These auditions are for membership in the Symphony for the entire 20-21 season. The orchestra’s fall format – still in development – may be a mixture of remote and in-person activity, with the intention that activities will all be centered on the experience of large ensemble playing and repertoire. As a fall term course, Orchestra is projected to have multiple options of coursework available to students, in order to accommodate students studying remotely as well as those on Grounds. We hope the spring term allows a return to our normal schedule of full rehearsals and performances. Due to the unusual circumstances of the current season, the Charlottesville Symphony will also accept video auditions in January 2021, from those hoping to join the ensemble beginning in the spring term. January auditions will be subject to available space. The submission deadline is Wednesday, January 20.”
