The Charlottesville Symphony’s concerts, education programs and community engagement activities would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers. Volunteers help at Youth Concerts, assist administrative staff, usher at performances and more. Join us today! Contact Janet Kaltenbach at 434-924-6505 or orchestra@virginia.edu.
Ushers at all Symphony Masterworks and Holiday concerts are recruited and scheduled through the McIntire Department of Music at UVA. Interested in ushering at a Symphony concert? Click here to complete the Music Department volunteer form, then use the Event Usher link on the same page to sign up to usher for a Symphony concert.

Youth Concerts
Each October the orchestra hosts over 1,500 fourth and fifth grade students at Old Cabell Hall for two annual Youth Concerts. Orchestra volunteers act as greeters, ushers and navigators, helping make sure that students and teachers know how to find Old Cabell Hall, enter in the right doors and find their seats in the auditorium. And as a bonus, all volunteers get to sit in the audience for these concerts which are otherwise closed to the public!
These free concerts are a tremendous asset to the community. Volunteers come back year after year to see how the music effects the students. And we could never do it all without the tremendous effort of our volunteers!
Musical Instrument Petting Zoos
The Symphony hosts Musical Instrument Petting Zoos at both the Virginia Film Festival Family Day in early November and at a series of programs at the Virginia Discovery Museum each winter. During these petting zoos, children can play a variety of orchestral instruments for themselves. Volunteers are needed to help transport instruments and supplies, to greet families and to aid with set up and clean up.
Each season the Charlottesville Symphony Society hosts a variety of events designed to make new friends for the orchestra. Volunteers are needed to assist in strategizing, organizing and staffing activities such as Conduct Us!, Music at the Market, community receptions and presentations to civic organizations like Rotary, Kiwanis and the Newcomers Club. Contact Janet Kaltenbach at (434) 924-6505 or orchestra@virginia.edu for more information.
