From left to right: Kate Tamarkin (2006-2017), Benjamin Rous (2017-present), Douglas Hargrave (1974-1991). The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia welcomed nearly 1,400 fourth and fifth grade students and their teachers to Old Cabell Hall for Youth Concerts on October 17. Designed to introduce children to the families of orchestral instruments, this year’s program was titled “PETER, the Bees, the Alligator…and…the WOLF!” Principal Percussion I-Jen Fang was the featured soloist in a jaw-dropping arrangement of Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Flight of the Bumblebee” for marimba and orchestra. Charlottesville Symphony Music Director Benjamin Rous conducted the orchestra and also narrated the beloved “Peter and the Wolf” by Sergei Prokofiev. These annual, free Youth Concerts are made possible by the Mr. and Mrs. James L. Brown Fund for Youth Concerts, the Richard M. and Tessa G. The Charlottesville Symphony had a fantastic season opening concert this past month! Soloist Jiyeon Choi dazzled the Opening Night crowd with her jazzy performance of Artie Shaw’s Clarinet Concerto!Charlottesville Symphony Music Director Benjamin Rous asked brass players to give it their all during Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5. They delivered! The Charlottesville Symphony received a well-deserved standing ovation on Opening Night of its 50th Anniversary Season.
